The Cairo Citadel: Redefining the Iconic Landmark with a Fresh and Modern Identity

A Powerful and Unique Corporate Identity Designed by Rana Galal

The Cairo Citadel, a historic seat of government and residence of rulers for 700 years, has been given a new lease of life with a captivating visual identity. Renowned designer Rana Galal took on the challenge of representing the contrast between the citadel's rich heritage and its modern surroundings in a fresh and modern way. The result is a bilingual logo mark and a comprehensive branding concept that captures the essence of this iconic landmark.

Galal's design for the Cairo Citadel stands out with its unique properties and strengths. The logo, inspired by Arabian design patterns, is created in a block form that can be split into two rectangles, always located opposite each other. This represents the changes happening in the culture and place in an abstract way. The primary colors of black and white reflect the brand's slogan, "City of Contrast," while the secondary color is inspired by the bloodshed during the Massacre event that took place within the citadel. Galal also developed an experimental sign system that follows the same concept, further enhancing the brand's identity.

When it comes to the realization of this design, Galal explored different visual languages to develop a brand identity, logo design, and signage system that are inspired by Egyptian culture and its local citizens. The logo has a ratio of 2 squares to 5 squares, and Helvetica New was chosen as the main typeface for its simplicity and modernity. The curves and angles of the font are similar to the logo type, creating consistency and harmony.

The Cairo Citadel's corporate identity goes beyond aesthetics; it produces a unique experience that allows people to see the place in a new perspective. Galal's design successfully bridges the gap between the present and the past, showcasing the soul of history and comparing it with modern life. The branding concept captures the contrast within the citadel's atmosphere, Cairo's culture, and its local citizens, presenting it in a challenging, fresh, simple, and modern way.

The design project for the Cairo Citadel was realized during Rana Galal's bachelor's degree in Graphic Design at the German University in Cairo. The research process involved extensive exploration of related designs within the culture and a deep dive into the history, art, communications, and literature of the citadel. Galal spent time with local and international visitors, as well as guides and experts who shared their knowledge and opened doors to new perspectives. The result is a brand that not only reflects the culture but also enhances a person's visit experience.

The Cairo Citadel's rebranding project presented several challenges, including capturing the essence of the citadel's history and culture while maintaining a modern and simple design. Galal's extensive research and dedication helped overcome these challenges, resulting in a powerful and captivating brand that represents the complexity and diversity of the citadel.

The Cairo Citadel's new identity has garnered recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2021. This award recognizes the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the branding concept, which meets professional and industrial requirements. Galal's design has successfully integrated industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
